Competitions

The best way to improve and enjoy tennis long-term is simple: learn, practise, play. Coaching builds your tools, but playing the game is where those skills come to life and you discover what to work on next. Below are competition and match-play opportunities to help you take the next step — from social tennis through to structured competitions and tournaments.

Junior Competition

MRTA Junior Competition (Saturday mornings)

The MRTA runs a junior competition on Saturday mornings, with grades ranging from A Grade through to D Grade.

This is a structured, club-based competition where players represent Gisborne and play against other local clubs in the area. It’s best suited to juniors who can:

  • serve and rally at a basic level

  • keep score and understand the rules

  • enjoy playing matches as part of a team environment

Adult Competition

MRTA Thursday Night Competition (7:00pm)

A structured doubles competition played on Thursday nights (starting around 7:00pm).
Players are graded into sections (typically Section 1 through to 4/5) depending on level.

MRTA Wednesday Night Ladies Competition

A structured ladies doubles competition run on Wednesday nights, with graded sections depending on level.

Midweek Ladies Competition (Tuesday mornings ~10:00am)

A great option for players who want competitive tennis during the day — especially:

  • returning players getting back into tennis

  • players who have been building their skills and are ready for match play

Pennant (Tennis Victoria)

Pennant is a Tennis Victoria competition and is generally a stronger, more formal level of competition. It covers a wider area across Melbourne and is suited to players who want a bigger challenge.

Pennant includes opportunities for both singles and doubles, with teams graded into sections based on standard.

Social Tennis (No Commitment)

If you’re not ready to commit to a weekly team, or you just want a relaxed way to play and meet people, social tennis is a great option.

Wednesday Night Social Tennis

A friendly social hit (mostly adults). No commitment — just turn up and play doubles.

Saturday Afternoon Social Tennis

Another casual, no-commitment option where players can come down for a hit and enjoy some doubles in a relaxed environment.

These sessions are ideal if you:

  • don’t have time for a weekly team

  • are returning to tennis after a break

  • want to build match confidence in a social setting

Club Championships (Gisborne Tennis Club)

Gisborne Tennis Club runs Junior and Adult Club Championships each year, usually around March.

Please note: players generally need to be club members to participate.

Tournaments

Gisborne Junior Development Tournaments (Community events)

Gisborne Tennis Club runs two Junior Development tournaments per year, designed for club and community players who want more match play in a supportive format.

These events are typically run in a round-robin format, making them a great first tournament experience.

Tennis Australia Tournament Calendar (More tournament options)

For players looking to play tournaments beyond Gisborne, Tennis Australia provides a national tournament calendar with a wide range of events — from colour ball tournaments through to junior and open events.

A great option if you want to:

  • play outside your local area

  • build your tennis experience and confidence

  • meet more players and grow your tennis network

Country long-weekend tournaments (great for all levels)

Many country tournaments run over long weekends (e.g. Labour Day, Easter) and are popular because they offer graded events (A, B, C, D Grade) plus junior events — meaning club and community players have plenty of opportunities to compete at the right level.

They’re also a great family weekend away, and some venues even offer the chance to play on grass courts.

Examples include: Wangaratta, Wodonga, Warrnambool, Yarrawonga (and many more listed on the tournament calendar).
